  • Traveling Outside Canada After Submitting Citizenship Application: What You Need to Know

Are you a Canadian permanent resident (PR) considering travel plans after submitting your citizenship application? While the desire to explore the world is understandable, it’s crucial to understand the implications of leaving Canada during this process.

Here’s what you need to know to ensure you remain eligible for Canadian citizenship:

1. Be Aware of Citizenship Eligibility Criteria: As a PR, you must be eligible for citizenship at the time of application. Remember, only Canadian PRs can apply for citizenship. Temporary residents, such as foreign workers and international students, are not eligible.

2. Meet Residency Requirements: To maintain PR status, you must meet the residency requirement, which entails residing in Canada for a minimum of 730 days over the past five years. This requirement allows for flexibility, as the 730 days don’t need to be continuous.

3. Maintain PR Status Until Citizenship Oath: It’s crucial to maintain your PR status until you take the Oath of Citizenship. Losing PR status before this can jeopardize your eligibility for Canadian citizenship.

4. Travel Preparation with PR Card: If you plan to travel outside Canada, ensure you have a valid PR card for easy re-entry. Renew your card before departure if it’s set to expire during your travels. Remember, PR cards can only be renewed in Canada.

5. Obtain Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) if Necessary: If you don’t have a valid PR card, you’ll need to apply for a PRTD to re-enter Canada. Note that PRTDs can only be applied for from outside Canada.

6. Communication with IRCC: Stay informed about communication from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). IRCC usually communicates via mail or email, and it’s essential to respond promptly to their communications. Missing appointments or failing to provide requested information can impact your application process.

7. Attend Scheduled Appointments: Attend all scheduled appointments and events related to your citizenship application. If you’re unable to attend, communicate promptly with the local IRCC office that sent the event notice.

By adhering to these guidelines, you can travel outside Canada while ensuring your eligibility for Canadian citizenship remains intact.
